Energy transition

Decarbonizing our value chain

In order to achieve our sustainability goals, we are committed to reducing our current emissions by 25% by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality for our operations by 2050. To achieve this, we at ArcelorMittal Mines and Infrastructure Canada, are developing a decarbonization of our entire value chain.

At the mine, several of our shovels are electric and we plan to use trucks that run on cleaner fuels such as natural gas, electricity or ethanol. Our crusher and concentrator are already electrified, allowing us to produce a low-carbon footprint for our iron concentrate. For rail transportation, we are currently looking at new locomotives that run on natural gas, electricity or hydrogen. Finally, we want to replace our boats with more energy-efficient ones.

In this way, we are also making changes at our Port-Cartier pellet plant: replacing part of the fuel oil with biofuel in 2022, eliminating fuel oil altogether by 2025, as well as research and development work to replace coal, first with anthracite by 2022 and with biochar by 2030.

These approaches support XCarb™, a global initiative bringing together all of ArcelorMittal’s ultra-low carbon steelmaking products and activities, as well as other broader initiatives and innovation projects, in a single effort to make tangible progress towards increasingly environmentally responsible steel.
