ArcelorMittal Mining Canada honoured at the 2023 Mercuriades awards

Longueuil, May 24, 2023 – ArcelorMittal Mining Canada G.P. (“ArcelorMittal”) is proud to announce that it won the Mercure award in the “Ordre des CPA du Québec – Business Strategy” category at the Mercuriades competition organised by the Fédération des Chambres de commerce du Québec.

“Our market is going through a profound transformation, and we are delighted that a competition as prestigious as the Mercuriades recognizes the quality of the strategy that we developed to stand out in this business context. I thank our employees, who allow us to make our vision a little more concrete each day, and I salute the invaluable collaboration of our partners at Rémabec and BioÉnergie AE Côte-Nord Canada. I am convinced that we will continue to accomplish great things together,” declared Mapi Mobwano, President and Chief Executive Officer of ArcelorMittal Mining Canada.

ArcelorMittal’s business strategy is built around its energy transition. Among other initiatives, it includes the conversion of the process of its Port-Cartier pellet plant to steer all production to direct reduction pellets, an essential product to operate the electric arc furnaces to which a growing number of steel mills are converting with the aim of reducing their greenhouse gas emissions.

“Our business strategy will allow us to become a key player in the decarbonization of the steel industry. Above all, we will ensure our Port-Cartier plant is established as an international reference,” Mr. Mobwano added.

We should remember that in 2022, the Port-Cartier pellet plant became the first in the world to substitute pyrolytic oil for heavy fuel oil on a continuous basis. By using this biofuel, produced locally by BioÉnergie AE Côte-Nord Canada, ArcelorMittal not only reduces its emissions but builds a true regional energy ecosystem by uniting the two great resources of the Côte-Nord region, iron and forest.

The Mercuriades is recognized as the most prestigious awards competition in the Québec business community. Every year, it celebrates the innovation, ambition, entrepreneurship and performance of Québec companies, both SMEs and large companies. The winners were announced at the Gala held at the Palais des congrès on May 23.

Fermont, April 26, 2023 – ArcelorMittal Mining Canada G.P. (“ArcelorMittal”) has reached another milestone in its energy transition by becoming the first mining company in Québec and the first company on the North Shore to use electric buses to transport its workers. The eight buses that will be used by ArcelorMittal were manufactured in Saint-Jérôme by the Lion Electric Company (NYSE: LEV) (TSX: LEV). They will be operated by Transport Therrien, a Fermont-based company that is part of Groupe Autobus Maheux, while the design and installation of the charging infrastructure was undertaken by Cléo, a subsidiary of Hydro-Québec.

“With the arrival of electric buses for our employees, we are continuing to implement our sustainable development strategy. We are particularly pleased about being the first in Québec to bring this plan to fruition in collaboration with local companies like Lion Electric, Transport Therrien and Cléo, who are teaming up with us to help us reduce our carbon footprint,” said Mapi Mobwano, president and CEO of ArcelorMittal Mining Canada.

“We are proud to participate in decarbonizing our industry by using electric vehicles. Since acquiring our first electric bus in 2016, we have developed the expertise to meet the energy transition challenge in northern environments. Today, we pay tribute to ArcelorMittal’s leadership. This unprecedented project proves that it is now possible to operate a fleet of electric buses north of the 53rd parallel,” said Pierre Maheux, president of Groupe Autobus Maheux

To support and encourage the electrification of transportation, ArcelorMittal has also started installing electric charging stations at its Mont-Wright and Port-Cartier facilities. Twelve FLO charging stations have already been installed and more will be installed within a few months. These stations are accessible at all times and are free of charge for employees.

ArcelorMittal aims to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2030 and to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

ArcelorMittal Railway named
“Regional Railway of the Year” by Railway Age

Port-Cartier, February 13, 2023 – ArcelorMittal Infrastructure Canada (“ArcelorMittal”) is proud to announce that the American magazine Railway Age has awarded it the title of “Regional Railway of the Year”. Founded in 1856, Railway Age is one of the most recognized publications in the railway industry and the one with the greatest longevity.

This distinction will be presented to the ArcelorMittal team during a ceremony that will be held this April in New Orleans, Louisiana, in the context of the 2023 edition of the Annual Conference of the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association.

“We are honoured to receive this award, which highlights the outstanding work of our teams to operate a world-class railway. Above all, we recognize a remarkable performance to protect our workers’ health and safety, which has translated into zero lost-time injury since January 2021. We are all very proud of this achievement,” declared Mapi Mobwano, Chairman of the Management Committee of ArcelorMittal Infrastructure Canada.

“We are privileged that we can count on highly skilled workers who continuously enable us to raise our standards and position ourselves advantageously in our economic sector. It is a great source of pride for our team to see our efforts recognized in this way by the major players of the North American railway industry,” said Michael LaBrie, General Manager, ArcelorMittal Infrastructure Canada.

The ArcelorMittal Railway connects the Mont-Wright and Fire Lake mines to the ArcelorMittal facilities in Port-Cartier. Every year, it allows shipping of over 25 million tonnes of iron ore to the international markets. It runs over 420 kilometres and includes 50% curves, 20 bridges, 5 tunnels and 19 sidings. A train today is composed of 210 cars and is over two kilometres long. On the average, four trains make a two-way trip every day between Mont-Wright and Port-Cartier.

Among the factors that drew Railway Age’s attention to present this award, we should mention the remarkable performance in health and safety, a car availability rate over 95%, a sustained maintenance program particularly involving grinding, rail lubrication and wheel reprofiling, and the replacement each year of more than 2,400 tonnes of rails and 25,000 ties.

Montreal, November 22, 2022 – ArcelorMittal Mining Canada G.P. (“ArcelorMittal”) has won an EnviroLys Award in the ICI+ Green Project category for introducing the use of pyrolytic oil at its Port-Cartier plant. The EnviroLys Awards recognize private expertise in the green economy, entrepreneurship and innovation of companies in the environmental services industry. They are awarded by the Council of Environmental Technology Companies of Quebec (“CETEQ”).

“Replacing part of the heavy fuel oil we use in Port-Cartier with pyrolytic oil is the first step in our energy transition. We are continuing our efforts to go even further in decarbonizing our operations and we are delighted to receive this recognition by the industry,” said Mapi Mobwano, President and Chief Executive Officer of ArcelorMittal Mining Canada. “By using a biofuel produced locally with wood residues, we are above all uniting the two great resources of the Côte-Nord: iron and the forest. We are working to put in place a whole regional energy ecosystem and the results obtained so far confirm that this strategy shows great promise.”

To date, three million litres of pyrolytic oil have been consumed at the Port-Cartier pellet plant. The energy efficiency of the biofuel, which is manufactured by BioÉnergie AE Côte-Nord Canada, exceeds expectations. ArcelorMittal has therefore decided to accelerate the conversion of other areas that can accommodate pyrolytic oil.

The use of pyrolytic oil will reduce the use of heavy fuel oil by 23% at the pellet plant, which corresponds to an annual reduction of 57,600 tonnes of CO2 equivalent, or the removal of 14,000 vehicles from our roads. Since the introduction of pyrolytic oil last July, reductions in CO2 equivalent have already amounted to 4,500 tonnes, which represents 1,000 cars taken off the road.

The ArcelorMittal Group has made a commitment to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2030 and to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The ArcelorMittal plant in Port-Cartier is the first pellet plant in the world to use pyrolytic oil on an ongoing basis.
