The ArcelorMittal pellet plant in Port-Cartier is the first in the world to use pyrolytic oil continuously

Montréal, September 22, 2022 – ArcelorMittal Mining Canada G.P. (“ArcelorMittal”), is proud to announce that it is the joint winner with Bioénergie AE Côte-Nord Canada (“BioÉnergie”), of the Eureka! Green and Prosperous Québec Award, presented by Écotech Québec, in the Natural Resources category.

“The partnership we established with Bioénergie AE Côte-Nord Canada is a great success and we are proud that our efforts to reduce our carbon footprint are recognized by the industry. The integration into our pellet plant of pyrolytic oil produced in Port-Cartier is a structuring project that unites the North Shore’s two great resources – iron and the forest – and which also allows us to begin creating a regional energy ecosystem together. The introduction of pyrolytic oil at the Port-Cartier pellet plant began last July, and over 1 million litres have been consumed to date. The energy yield exceeds expectations and ArcelorMittal has therefore decided to accelerate the conversion of other zones that can accommodate pyrolytic oil on its two production lines.

“We are delighted that our efforts to contribute to a cleaner economy are celebrated. We are working ceaselessly to develop innovative ways to reclaim wood residues. The pyrolytic oil we supply to ArcelorMittal concretizes our commitment to local production of a renewable energy source that contributes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” explained Réjean Paré, President of Groupe Rémabec.

To produce its pyrolytic oil, BioÉnergie uses the wood residues of Arbec Lumber, another affiliate of Group Rémabec. This renewable biofuel ultimately will allow a 23% reduction of the use of heavy oil at the Port-Cartier pellet plant, an annual reduction of 57,600 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent, or the removal of 14,000 vehicles from our roads. Let us remember that the ArcelorMittal Group has made the commitment to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions 25% by 2030 and reach carbon neutrality by 2050.

May 25, 2022 – ArcelorMittal has today launched its search for the best companies and brightest ideas focused on breakthrough technologies which hold the potential to accelerate the decarbonisation of the steel industry. Breakthrough technology start-ups worldwide are invited to submit applications to compete for investment from ArcelorMittal’s XCarb™ Innovation Fund, which aims to invest up to US$100 million annually in such transformative technologies, and access to ArcelorMittal’s advice and expertise in innovation, research and development, technology commercialisation and business mentorship.

Aligned with ArcelorMittal’s purpose, ‘Smarter steels for people and planet’, the XCarb™ Innovation Fund invests in companies with the potential to accelerate the transition to low, and ultimately zero, carbon emissions steelmaking, enabling them to develop more quickly and achieve the scale needed for their technologies to become commercially viable.

This year, finalists will be invited to pitch their ideas at an Accelerator Day for the chance to secure investment support from the fund to scale up their pioneering projects and help drive progress towards a lower emissions future. The support on offer is not just monetary, successful applicants will also have access to:

• Unparalleled industry expertise and advice
• Industry leading research centres and R&D programs to accelerate technological development
• Commercial expertise regarding technologies, IP protection and global roll-out
• Significant back office and group functional capability to enable scale-up and speed up time to market

Applicants will need to be registered start-ups with concepts for commercially scalable technologies that hold strong potential to decarbonise steelmaking. Eligible start-ups can apply from anywhere in the world as the fund is keen to make investments in the most innovative technology on a global basis, to support ArcelorMittal’s decarbonisation journey. Submissions are invited across seven distinct technology domains:

1. Disruption in steelmaking (processes and technologies)
2. Waste to gas or biocarbon (innovative ways to convert waste)
3. Gases reforming/Gases transformation technologies
4. Disruptive hydrogen technologies
5. Carbon capture, utilisation and storage (specifically carbon capture with transformation to chemicals/fuel or permanent sequestration/mineralisation)
6. Long-term, large-scale energy storage technologies
7. Clean energy technologies

The Accelerator Day itself will take place in mid-late July (final date TBC) with finalists having the opportunity to present their company and pitch their pioneering technologies in front of a panel of industry-experts.

ArcelorMittal’s XCarb™ Innovation Fund

Since its launch in March last year, ArcelorMittal XCarb™ Innovation Fund has already committed US$180 million in projects and technologies which are accelerating the decarbonisation of the steel industry transition. To date, its investments have spanned four companies developing cutting edge technologies in the fields of renewable energy, long-term energy storage, carbon recycling and green hydrogen. They are:

1. Heliogen, a renewable energy company which harnesses solar energy by using a field of mirrors which act as a multi-acre magnifying glass to concentrate and capture sunlight;

Port-Cartier, May 11, 2022 – At a press conference today, ArcelorMittal Mining Canada (“ArcelorMittal”) and BioÉnergie AE Côte-Nord Canada (“BioÉnergie”), a corporation held in part by Groupe Rémabec/Arbec Forest Products Inc. announced the signing of a three-year agreement for the delivery of 16 million litres of pyrolytic oil per year to the ArcelorMittal pellet plant.

“Today’s announcement marks the materialization of the start of our energy transition. The pyrolytic oil produced locally by BioÉnergie will allow us ultimately to reduce our use of heavy oil by 23% at our Port-Cartier plant. This is a structuring project that unites the two major resources of the Côte-Nord region: iron and the forest. This is tremendous news for the entire region and we are delighted,” declared Mapi Mobwano, President and Chief Executive Officer of ArcelorMittal Mining Canada.

To produce its pyrolytic oil, BioÉnergie will use the wood residues of Arbec Lumber, another affiliate of Groupe Rémabec. The agreement announced today also includes the use of ArcelorMittal’s railway by Arbec, based on 80 trains per year to transport wood from its forest camps to its Port-Cartier sawmill.
