Port-Cartier, October 15, 2024 – At a press conference today, ArcelorMittal Mining Canada (“ArcelorMittal”) inaugurated the construction site for the flotation project at its Port-Cartier pellet plant. On hand for the event were Benoit Charette, Minister of the Environment, the Fight Against Climate Change, Wildlife and Parks, and Minister Responsible for the Laurentides Region, and Kateri Champagne Jourdain, Minister of Employment, Minister Responsible for the Côte-Nord Region, and Member for Duplessis.

Representing a total investment of over $200 million for the region, the project is made possible by $50 million in financial support announced today by Minister Benoit Charette as part of the Quebec government’s “Défi GES” program. It will eventually deliver an annual CO2e reduction of approximately 200,000 tonnes, making it the biggest GHG emission reduction project in Quebec.

“This major investment marks a turning point for ArcelorMittal and the North Shore, positioning Port-Cartier as one of the world’s leading producers of direct-reduced pellets,” said Mapi Mobwano, President and CEO of ArcelorMittal Mining Canada. “Most importantly, the opening of this construction site is proof that the project has come to fruition, and that our company is committed to maintaining our activities here in Port-Cartier and to actively contributing to the North Shore’s economic vitality.”

The project will create some 100 construction jobs, with peaks of up to 200. An estimated 25 permanent positions will be established once everything is up and running.

Announced in 2021 at the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference, the flotation project will upgrade the Port-Cartier pellet plant to produce up to 10 million tonnes of direct-reduced iron pellets a year.

The iron oxide pellets produced will have low silica and high iron content. These high-purity iron pellets, produced with iron from the Labrador Trough, are highly strategic because steelmakers need them to upgrade their processes to electric arc furnaces in order to reduce their own GHG emissions.

ArcelorMittal delighted with Government of Canada decision to include high-purity iron on its list of critical materials

Longueuil, June 11, 2024 – ArcelorMittal Mining Canada (“ArcelorMittal”) enthusiastically welcomes the announcement by the Government of Canada to add high-purity iron to Canada’s list of critical materials. This mineral allows fabrication of a greener steel essential to decarbonization of the global economy.

“We salute the decision by the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, the Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, which is consolidating the importance of high-purity iron for the Canadian economy. “Whether we think of the steel necessary for manufacturing of wind turbines, solar panels or electric vehicles, this recognition also shed slight on the crucial role played by our company in implementing projects that will allow achievement of a lower-carbon economy,” declared CEO Mapi Mobwano.

Already identified as a critical and strategic mineral by the Québec Government since last January, high-purity iron is indispensable in the transition to a greener economy and the reduction of greenhouse gases on the local, national and international scale.

The North American automotive industry recognizes ArcelorMittal’s global decarbonisation efforts

Port-Cartier, August 1st, 2023 – ArcelorMittal Mining Canada is proud to announce that its parent company, ArcelorMittal, has won the 11th annual Altair Enlighten Award in the Sustainable Process category, and that the use of pyrolytic oil as a replacement for heavy fuel oil in Port-Cartier was one of the two featured projects. The construction of an industrial scale demonstration facility at ArcelorMittal’s steel plant in Ghent, Belgium, was also highlighted by the award. This facility will convert waste wood into sustainable bioenergy.

Presented in association with the Center for Automotive Research (CAR), the Altair Enlighten Awards recognise cutting-edge technological advancements that minimise energy consumption and carbon emissions.

“The substitution of heavy fuel oil with locally produced pyrolytic oil represents considerable progress towards the production of carbon neutral pellets, which will be essential for steelmakers to reduce their own emissions. We are delighted to see our efforts to decarbonise the raw material we supply to steelmakers being recognised by the North American automotive industry,” said Mapi Mobwano, President and Chief Executive Officer of ArcelorMittal Mining Canada.

The ArcelorMittal plant in Port-Cartier is the first pellet plant in the world to use pyrolytic oil on an ongoing basis. Replacing part of the heavy fuel oil consumed in the plant with pyrolytic oil is the first step of ArcelorMittal Mining Canada’s energy transition, which plans for further GHG reductions from bunker fuel substitution with bioenergy and other green technologies. The potential reductions are expected to represent approximately 200 KT of GHG emissions when all bunker fuel will have been removed from the process.

ArcelorMittal aims to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions globally by 25% by 2030 and to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
