ArcelorMittal shatters recordswith a 9.6 million tonne blast at Mont-Wright

Mont-Wright, February 26, 2026 – ArcelorMittal Mining Canada (“ArcelorMittal”) has reached a new milestone by carrying out an exceptional blast of more than 9.6 million tonnes at its MontWright mining complex. This record-breaking operation, made possible by the expertise and rigour of our teams, has once again raised the bar for mining production.

The blast combined two panels of different sizes. The main panel, weighing a total of 9.3 million tonnes, required 3.4 million kilograms of explosives. This is a new world record for a single panel, surpassing the previous record of 3 million kilograms of explosives used in the blast on November 5.

A nearby panel triggered in the same operation added 370,000 tonnes and 276,000 kilograms of explosives, bringing the combined total to over 9.6 million tonnes of dynamite and over 3.6 million kilograms of explosives loaded. Another record for the Mont-Wright teams, who also used 7,962 detonators to carry out this large-scale operation.

A groundbreaking collective achievement
Each stage of this large-scale blast was carried out according to the highest health, safety and environmental standards. A comprehensive evacuation plan, a properly established safety perimeter and the use of advanced sequencing technologies ensured precise detonator initiation, optimized fragmentation control and minimized environmental impacts. The explosives contained a cutting-edge additive that helps limit gas emissions and, consequently, the environmental footprint of the operation.

“After the historic blast on November 5, we knew we could go even further,” said Mapi Mobwano, President and CEO. “This new milestone is proof that our teams are constantly raising the bar while remaining committed to safety and environmental responsibility.

The operation, which took place in Pit A of the Mont Survie sector, required the expertise of specialists in mining engineering, geology, surveying, operations, health and safety and the environment. Through tight coordination, the teams ensured the stability of the site and minimized seismic and environmental impacts.

This new record blast once again demonstrates ArcelorMittal’s ability to innovate and push the boundaries, while keeping safety, the environment and operational excellence at the heart of its activities

Halte-Chaleur de Port-Cartier : A second year or partnership to help people facing homelessness

Photo Credit : Ville de Port-Cartier

Port-Cartier, November 14, 2025 – For the second year running, ArcelorMittal Mining Canada (“ArcelorMittal”) is partnering with Ville de Port-Cartier to create the Halte-chaleur, a much- needed warming centre providing shelter, comfort and safety to people facing homelessness or severe hardship.

With its $43,300 donation, ArcelorMittal is a key partner in this municipal initiative, which addresses a critical need for winter shelter on the North Shore. The company will also be handing out tuques and mittens to help users cope with the harsh winter weather.

Located on Patterson Island, the warming centre is housed in a construction trailer graciously provided by Location Larin. With ten beds, it provides refuge for people who don’t have access to stable or adequate housing. The supervised shelter is open every night from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m., from November 6, 2025, to May 1, 2026, allowing people to warm up, get some rest and receive support in a safe environment.

The warming centre is made possible thanks to the collaboration of Ville de Port-Cartier, ArcelorMittal, CISSS de la Côte-Nord and several other community organizations.

“We firmly believe in the importance of supporting local initiatives that make a real difference in people’s lives,” said Anne-Marie Dontigny, acting director of communications at ArcelorMittal Mining Canada. “The Halte-chaleur de Port-Cartier is a fine example of solidarity and community involvement. By supporting this project, we hope to meet the growing needs of our most vulnerable residents, particularly during the harsh winter months, while also strengthening the social fabric of the region.”

The warming centre is part of a municipal initiative to prevent homelessness and social distress during the cold season. Around twenty people used the service last winter, reflecting a growing need in the region.

Danielle Beaupré, mayor of Port-Cartier, also stressed the importance of the project: “Ville de Port-Cartier is committed to supporting the Halte-chaleur, a vital shelter for vulnerable people who have no safe place to stay and have to cope with the harsh winter weather. This project is a shining example of solidarity in Port-Cartier. It highlights the importance of the city working together with local partners to serve the community and meet the basic needs of residents.”

Fermont, March 24, 2025 – The President and CEO of ArcelorMittal Mining Canada, Mapi Mobwano, in the presence of the Mayor of Fermont and Warden of the Caniapiscau regional county municipality, Martin St-Laurent, and Karine Sénéchal, President of United Steelworkers Local 5778 (Gagnon, Fire Lake, Fermont), announced the purchase by ArcelorMittal of land located in the Rue du Fer/Rue de l’Hématite sector to build a hundred housing units for mining industry workers and their families.

Martin St-Laurent and Mapi Mobwano today signed an agreement that enables ArcelorMittal to acquire lot 6 460 762, measuring 14,853 square metres.

“Our company is growing and we believe in a model based on local residency, contrary to the trend in the industry that favours the “fly-in fly-out” model. We must ensure we can house our workers and their families to pursue our efforts in strengthening the region’s vitality. Last year we celebrated the 50th anniversary of Ville de Fermont and of our Mont-Wright mine, evidence of a rich heritage that leaves room for a promising future, with confirmed operations for another 30 years. We are delighted to have been able to agree with Ville de Fermont for the purchase of land that can accommodate a real estate project of one hundred housing units over the coming years,” Mapi Mobwano announced.

“I am pleased with this great announcement for Ville de Fermont. The ArcelorMittal project will offer one hundred housing units for its employees and their families. This means increasing the town’s resident population and offering a quality living environment to future Fermont residents,” Martin St-Laurent declared.

The real estate project should be carried out in three phases over the next five years, according to the preliminary discussions with potential partners.

“On the initiative of the Syndicat des Métallos, ArcelorMittal is collaborating with partners with the goal of building future housing to accommodate our people. The teams are currently working enthusiastically to define the project and the business model. We will be proud to present the chosen project this spring to the population of Ville de Fermont,” Mapi Mobwano specified.

“This is excellent news for the workers and their families. The housing problem in Fermont is a major issue that we had to resolve. We are happy to have been at the origin of these meetings, which are resulting today in the announced partnership,” Karine Sénéchal was glad to say.

Fermont, March 20, 2025 – Childcare centre Mur-mûr General Manager Caroll-Ann Després-Dubé, along with Fermont Mayor Martin St-Laurent and ArcelorMittal Mining Canada President and CEO Mapi Mobwano, announced today major developments regarding construction plans childcare centre Mur-mûr in Fermont.

Childcare centre Mur-mûr’s board of directors has accepted the recommendation of the new CPE’s implementation committee to use the current Fermont town hall site for its future facilities. Following consultations and a rigorous analysis of various proposals, the current town hall site has emerged as the most suitable location to meet the children’s needs and deliver the desired educational project. Preliminary designs include wonderful play and rest areas for the children to enjoy.

“The current town hall site will allow the future childcare centre to remain connected to the windbreak wall,” explained Caroll-Ann Després-Dubé. “The children will have easy access to the municipal facilities. There’s enough room for 100 daycare spots, and we can even develop accommodation for future educators. The site has direct access to a large park right in front of the facility, which is ideal for this nature-oriented childcare centre. These points made by the new childcare centre’s implementation committee were major factors in the board of directors’ decision.”

“This is excellent news for Ville de Fermont,” said Martin St-Laurent. “This childcare centre will give the town hall building, which was once a fire station, a new lease of life. Of course, a new town hall will have to be built to house the municipal administration. We’re in the process of identifying the best project to submit to the Ministère des Affaires municipales et de l’Habitation. In the meantime, our staff will have to be temporarily relocated so work on the childcare centre can start as soon as possible.”

“We’ve made a commitment to fund the construction of the new childcare centre Mur-mûr, and we will keep our word,” declared a delighted Mapi Mobwano. “I’m pleased to see that all parties have agreed on the location. All that’s left is to select the best project, one that provides the children with high-quality facilities and is in line with the educational vision of the childcare centre’s board of directors.”

“We’re thrilled—this is great news for our members,” said Karine Sénéchal, president of USW Local 5778 (Gagnon, Fire Lake, Fermont). “We applaud the childcare centre team, ArcelorMittal and Ville de Fermont for working together to provide our children with modern, high-quality facilities. We’ve been calling for this crucial investment for four years, and it’s very much in line with the community’s needs.”

Port-Cartier, March 19, 2025 – ArcelorMittal Infrastructure Canada (“ArcelorMittal”) is proud to announce that rehabilitation work on the main dock at its Port-Cartier facilities has been completed. The work was expected to be done by April 15, but was completed on March 14, i.e., four weeks in advance.

The early delivery of Dock 1 will enable ArcelorMittal to moor two ships at the same time, optimizing shipments of iron concentrate and pellets. This major dock rehabilitation project will allow shipping operations to continue with new, high-performance infrastructure, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, all year round.

Work on the other docks, i.e., Docks 2, 3 North, 3 East and South, is proceeding according to schedule. The dock construction contract was awarded to general contractor Hamel Construction of Saint-Édouard-de-Lotbinière, in Chaudière-Appalaches.

More than 50% of the overall project has been completed, with work slated for completion in the first quarter of 2026. One of the main challenges is to carry out the work while minimizing the impact on port operations without interruptions. Since work began, no port operations have been interrupted. All shipments are made from Dock 4.

“The early completion of Dock 1 demonstrates our commitment to improving our infrastructure while minimizing the impact on our operations,” said Mapi Mobwano, chair of the management committee of ArcelorMittal Infrastructure Canada. “This strategic project will enable us to optimize our shipping capacity and strengthen our position on the market. We’re proud of the progress we’ve made and will continue to work hard to achieve our goals.”

This will allow the ArcelorMittal Port to maintain its strategic position as one of the largest private ports in Canada. The complete rehabilitation of Docks 1, 2 and 3 North will require more than 4,600 tonnes of steel sheet piling produced by ArcelorMittal’s Belval plant in Luxembourg, as well as more than 20,000 m³ of concrete. Work began in April 2024, with an average of around fifty workers present on site daily.

The ArcelorMittal Infrastructure Canada seaport was built from 1958 to 1961.

Port-Cartier, October 15, 2024 – At a press conference today, ArcelorMittal Mining Canada (“ArcelorMittal”) inaugurated the construction site for the flotation project at its Port-Cartier pellet plant. On hand for the event were Benoit Charette, Minister of the Environment, the Fight Against Climate Change, Wildlife and Parks, and Minister Responsible for the Laurentides Region, and Kateri Champagne Jourdain, Minister of Employment, Minister Responsible for the Côte-Nord Region, and Member for Duplessis.

Representing a total investment of over $200 million for the region, the project is made possible by $50 million in financial support announced today by Minister Benoit Charette as part of the Quebec government’s “Défi GES” program. It will eventually deliver an annual CO2e reduction of approximately 200,000 tonnes, making it the biggest GHG emission reduction project in Quebec.

“This major investment marks a turning point for ArcelorMittal and the North Shore, positioning Port-Cartier as one of the world’s leading producers of direct-reduced pellets,” said Mapi Mobwano, President and CEO of ArcelorMittal Mining Canada. “Most importantly, the opening of this construction site is proof that the project has come to fruition, and that our company is committed to maintaining our activities here in Port-Cartier and to actively contributing to the North Shore’s economic vitality.”

The project will create some 100 construction jobs, with peaks of up to 200. An estimated 25 permanent positions will be established once everything is up and running.

Announced in 2021 at the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference, the flotation project will upgrade the Port-Cartier pellet plant to produce up to 10 million tonnes of direct-reduced iron pellets a year.

The iron oxide pellets produced will have low silica and high iron content. These high-purity iron pellets, produced with iron from the Labrador Trough, are highly strategic because steelmakers need them to upgrade their processes to electric arc furnaces in order to reduce their own GHG emissions.
