Port-Cartier, February 13, 2023 – ArcelorMittal Infrastructure Canada (“ArcelorMittal”) is proud to announce that the American magazine Railway Age has awarded it the title of “Regional Railway of the Year”. Founded in 1856, Railway Age is one of the most recognized publications in the railway industry and the one with the greatest longevity.
This distinction will be presented to the ArcelorMittal team during a ceremony that will be held this April in New Orleans, Louisiana, in the context of the 2023 edition of the Annual Conference of the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association.

Above all, we recognize a remarkable performance to protect our workers’ health and safety, which has translated into zero lost-time injury since January 2021. The ArcelorMittal Railway connects the Mont-Wright and Fire Lake mines to the ArcelorMittal facilities in Port-Cartier. Every year, it allows shipping of over 25 million tonnes of iron ore to the international markets. It runs over 420 kilometres and includes 50% curves, 20 bridges, 5 tunnels and 19 sidings. A train today is composed of 210 cars and is over two kilometres long. On the average, four trains make a two-way trip every day between Mont-Wright and Port-Cartier.
Among the factors that drew Railway Age’s attention to present this award, we should mention the remarkable performance in health and safety, a car availability rate over 95%, a sustained maintenance program particularly involving grinding, rail lubrication and wheel reprofiling, and the replacement each year of more than 2,400 tonnes of rails and 25,000 ties.

Montreal, November 22, 2022 – ArcelorMittal Mining Canada G.P. (“ArcelorMittal”) has won an EnviroLys Award in the ICI+ Green Project category for introducing the use of pyrolytic oil at its Port-Cartier plant. The EnviroLys Awards recognize private expertise in the green economy, entrepreneurship and innovation of companies in the environmental services industry. They are awarded by the Council of Environmental Technology Companies of Quebec (“CETEQ”).
“Replacing part of the heavy fuel oil we use in Port-Cartier with pyrolytic oil is the first step in our energy transition. We are continuing our efforts to go even further in decarbonizing our operations and we are delighted to receive this recognition by the industry,” said Mapi Mobwano, President and Chief Executive Officer of ArcelorMittal Mining Canada. “By using a biofuel produced locally with wood residues, we are above all uniting the two great resources of the Côte-Nord: iron and the forest. We are working to put in place a whole regional energy ecosystem and the results obtained so far confirm that this strategy shows great promise.”
To date, three million litres of pyrolytic oil have been consumed at the Port-Cartier pellet plant. The energy efficiency of the biofuel, which is manufactured by BioÉnergie AE Côte-Nord Canada, exceeds expectations. ArcelorMittal has therefore decided to accelerate the conversion of other areas that can accommodate pyrolytic oil.
The use of pyrolytic oil will reduce the use of heavy fuel oil by 23% at the pellet plant, which corresponds to an annual reduction of 57,600 tonnes of CO2 equivalent, or the removal of 14,000 vehicles from our roads. Since the introduction of pyrolytic oil last July, reductions in CO2 equivalent have already amounted to 4,500 tonnes, which represents 1,000 cars taken off the road.
The ArcelorMittal Group has made a commitment to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2030 and to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The ArcelorMittal plant in Port-Cartier is the first pellet plant in the world to use pyrolytic oil on an ongoing basis.

Port-Cartier, October 17, 2022 – ArcelorMittal Mines and Infrastructure Canada (“ArcelorMittal”) is pleased to announce that work on the outdoor playground at CPE Touchatouille’s “Sentier des merveilles” facility in Port-Cartier is now complete. ArcelorMittal covered the full cost of the project with a $200,000 donation to CPE Touchatouille.
“We’re delighted to be able to help provide a quality living environment for families in Port-Cartier,” said Mapi Mobwano, President and CEO of ArcelorMittal Mining Canada. “Our goal in building the ‘Sentier des merveilles’ playground was to provide a safe and engaging play area for children. We believe that to encourage families to settle on the North Shore, they need to have access to the best services. We’re proud to support CPE Touchatouille in its mission.”
Work at the “Sentier des merveilles” facility included grading, tree planting and the addition of benches, walkways, a paved bike and scooter path, a concrete paver surface and new fencing.
This completes Phase 1 of the CPE Touchatouille outdoor playground development project. Phase 2 will target the outdoor playground of the “Mer-Veilleuse” facility and is scheduled for delivery in 2023.

The introduction of pyrolytic oil at the Port-Cartier pellet plant began last July, and over 1 million litres have been consumed to date. The energy yield exceeds expectations and ArcelorMittal has therefore decided to accelerate the conversion of other zones that can accommodate pyrolytic oil on its two production lines.

To produce its pyrolytic oil, BioÉnergie uses the wood residues of Arbec Lumber, another affiliate of Group Rémabec. Breakthrough technology start-ups worldwide are invited to submit applications to compete for investment from ArcelorMittal’s XCarb™ Innovation Fund, which aims to invest up to US$100 million annually in such transformative technologies, and access to ArcelorMittal’s advice and expertise in innovation, research and development, technology commercialisation and business mentorship.
Aligned with ArcelorMittal’s purpose, ‘Smarter steels for people and planet’, the XCarb™ Innovation Fund invests in companies with the potential to accelerate the transition to low, and ultimately zero, carbon emissions steelmaking, enabling them to develop more quickly and achieve the scale needed for their technologies to become commercially viable.

Since its launch in March last year, ArcelorMittal XCarb™ Innovation Fund has already committed US$180 million in projects and technologies which are accelerating the decarbonisation of the steel industry transition. Port-Cartier, May 11, 2022 – At a press conference today, ArcelorMittal Mining Canada (“ArcelorMittal”) and BioÉnergie AE Côte-Nord Canada (“BioÉnergie”), a corporation held in part by Groupe Rémabec/Arbec Forest Products Inc. announced the signing of a three-year agreement for the delivery of 16 million litres of pyrolytic oil per year to the ArcelorMittal pellet plant.

The pyrolytic oil produced locally by BioÉnergie will allow us ultimately to reduce our use of heavy oil by 23% at our Port-Cartier plant. Port-Cartier, January 21, 2022 – ArcelorMittal Infrastructure Canada G.P. (“ArcelorMittal”) presented the 2022 edition of its steel-headed cane to Captain Aldwin Revelar of the bulk carrier Santa Barbara, the first ship to leave its Port-Cartier port facilities this year.
Originating from the Netherlands, the ship will depart ArcelorMittal’s port facilities today at 16:01 bound for Asia, carrying more than 155,000 tonnes of iron ore concentrate aboard. The bulk carrier Santa Barbara was built in 2015. It measures 295 metres long by 46 metres wide.
In 2021, ArcelorMittal’s port facilities in Port-Cartier welcomed 409 ships, performed more than 900 port entry and exit manoeuvres and handled over 25 million tonnes of iron ore, raw materials, fuel and grain.

ArcelorMittal devient ainsi Grand partenaire de l’organisme, dont la mission est d’accompagner les Fermontois atteints d’un cancer, d’offrir un apport financier direct, en plus de leur venir en aide pendant et après leurs traitements.
