(\u201cArcelorMittal\u201d) is pleased to announce that it has officially opened a new water treatment facility at its mining complex in <span class=\"nowrap-nom\">Mont-Wright<\/span>. The event was attended by Kateri\u00a0<span class=\"nowrap-nom\">Champagne-Jourdain<\/span>, Quebec\u2019s minister of employment and minister responsible for the <span class=\"nowrap-nom\">C\u00f4te-Nord<\/span> region; Kenny\u00a0Regis, an elected representative for Innu Takuaikan Uashat mak <span class=\"nowrap-nom\">Mani-utenam<\/span> (\u201cITUM\u201d); and Maril\u00e8ne\u00a0Gill, member of parliament for Manicouagan. In tribute to the Innu people and the Nitassinan territory on which it was built, the facility will be named \u201cNipi,\u201d which means \u201cwater\u201d in the Innu\u00a0language.<br><br>\u201cWe\u2019re working to achieve carbon neutrality across all our operations by 2050\u2014protecting the environment is at the heart of everything we do. This CAD\u00a065\u00a0million investment in the construction of the Nipi facility is a good example of that,\u201d said <span class=\"nowrap-nom\">Mapi\u00a0Mobwano<\/span>, president and CEO of ArcelorMittal Mining Canada. \u201cSince 2018, we\u2019ve implemented a comprehensive five-year investment program worth over CAD\u00a0300\u00a0million for projects related to the environment and water management, and we\u2019ll continue to work tirelessly to reduce our environmental footprint.\u201d<br><br>The Nipi plant was built between April\u00a02021 to March\u00a02023. The commissioning phase has been underway since mid-March, and full-scale operations will begin in a few weeks. Nordikeau, working in partnership with the Innu Nation, will operate the\u00a0facility.<br><br>This project is part of a major mine water management program aimed at facilitating adaptation to climate change and ensuring compliance with environmental laws and regulations. The Nipi facility project involved developing a system of channels and ponds around existing and future tailings piles to capture and treat all runoff south of the <span class=\"nowrap-nom\">Mont-Wright<\/span> mine into a single final effluent. This will allow the facility to ensure that the water quality of this final effluent meets regulatory standards. <br><br>\u201cWe\u2019re improving efficiency to reduce environmental risks and eliminate soil contamination. This facility addresses the need to filter runoff from the site, and our communities must continue to work together to find innovative solutions that help maintain a healthy environment,\u201d added Kenny\u00a0Regis, an elected representative for\u00a0ITUM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Nipi facility will treat approximately 10\u00a0million cubic metres of water per year, depending on annual precipitation. It was designed for a 100-year storm event. Its construction required 270,000\u00a0man-hours, and more than 4,000\u00a0cubic metres of concrete were\u00a0poured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>About ArcelorMittal Infrastructure Canada and ArcelorMittal Mining Canada<\/strong><br><strong><br><\/strong>Subsidiaries of ArcelorMittal, a leading steel company and one of the five biggest iron ore producers in the world, ArcelorMittal Infrastructure Canada (\u201cAMIC\u201d) and ArcelorMittal Mining Canada G.P. (\u201cAMMC\u201d) are two complementary companies operating in Quebec\u2019s <span class=\"nowrap-nom\">North\u00a0Shore<\/span> region. AMIC transports concentrate between <span class=\"nowrap-nom\">Mont-Wright<\/span> and <span class=\"nowrap-nom\">Port-Cartier<\/span> and operates a seaport at <span class=\"nowrap-nom\">Port-Cartier<\/span>, allowing AMMC products to be transported and shipped to four continents. AMMC produces concentrate and iron oxide pellets for the steel market. The two companies employ over 2,500\u00a0people, making ArcelorMittal the biggest employer on the <span class=\"nowrap-nom\">North\u00a0Shore<\/span>.
