Port-Cartier, January 14, 2026 – ArcelorMittal Infrastructure Canada G.P. (“ArcelorMittal”) marked the arrival of the first ship of the year at its port facilities in Port-Cartier by presenting its traditional steel headed cane to Captain Jiang Zhu, commander of the Panamax MV Hong Jing. This handover symbolizes the arrival of the first ship and the start of a new season of port operations.

Having arrived from Ireland, the ship left ArcelorMittal’s port facilities on January 11 bound for Hansaport, Germany, with a cargo of 78,520 tonnes of iron ore concentrate. Built in 2008, the ship is 225 metres long and 32 metres wide.

The start of the 2026 season coincides with remarkable 2025 results for ArcelorMittal’s port facilities. Iron ore shipments, including concentrate and pellets, reached a record high of 26.2 million tonnes, making 2025 the best year on record, with a historic second quarter in which 7.3 million tonnes were loaded.

This strong performance is also reflected in port activity, with 419 ships passing through and more than 1,000 entry and exit manoeuvres carried out in 2025.

ArcelorMittal’s internationally recognized port in Port-Cartier is the largest private seaport in Canada and has been a cornerstone of the region’s heritage for more than 60 years.
